Considered by many travelers and writers as the center of Laotian culture, it was once the royal capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom. Today this charming town features royal palaces, over 33 temples and beautiful nearby cascading waterfalls. Due to its location, it is not unusual to experience coffee plantations, river activity, and produce markets.

Temple of Wat Xieng Thong

The “monastery of the golden city” is Lao best-known and most visited monastery. This magnificent masterpiece was designed of the Luang Prabang style and features an elaborate tree of life mosaic, carved walls, rare Buddhist deities and a 12-meter high funeral carriage. One of the most interesting features is the rare reclining Buddha that dates from the year 1560 when the building of the temple started.

Royal Palace Museum

Built in the 20th century, this was originally the home of King Sisabang Vong and was designed in the French Beaux-Arts style with traditional Lao culture accents. During the communist period, it was turned into a museum after a renovation. At the entrance of the museum you will find a statue of King Sisabang Vong.

Mount Phousi

Known as the sacred hill of Luang Prabang, is one of the most respected spots to visit in Luang Prabang, that offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and the magnificent atmosphere that surrounds it when rising to the top. Some famous temples at the peak include Wat Tham Phousi, which has a large reclining Buddha, and Wat Chomsi. Prepare your health to tackle the hill with a tough 329-step stairway.

Pak Ou Caves

The Pak Ou Caves are the most revered holy sites in Laos. Located on the Mekong River, this famous attraction is near Luang Prabang and is a great river trip that offers a pleasant excursion through the riverside landscapes and local villages.

Kuang Si Waterfall

The Kuang Si Falls, sometimes spelled Kuang Xi or known as Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls, is a three tier waterfall about 29 kilometers south of Luang Prabang. They begin in a shallow pool atop a steep hillside that leads to the main fall with a 60 meters cascade.

Elephant Village Sanctuary

Elephant Village Sanctuary is around 15 kilometers from Luang Prabang, on the banks of the Nam Khan River. It is well-built in untouched nature, surrounded by foggy mountains and near the river. It intends to provide elephant contact programs and exceptional activities for both young and elderly people. So, here’s a great place for animal enthusiasts to get up close and personal with elephants.
