– Under Nguyen dynasty, Thua Thien Hue is known as Thua Thien. It was not until French colonization period, Thua Thien Hue was named as today. In 1976, Binh Tri Thien province was founded by joining Thua Thien province, Quang Binh province and Quang Tri province.
– Pursuant to Decision passed at the 5th session of National Assembly tenure VIII of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on June 30, 1989, Binh Tri Thien province were divided into three previous separated provinces. Thua Thien was renamed Thua Thien Hue
